For beginning students I start all the way at the beginning with the basics of percussion, from the way to hold the sticks and mallets, to how to read music. After the student grasps the fundamentals I introduce solo pieces to build a repertoire so that they may grow their musical knowledge and become a better musician. Music is like a language all it's own, and I try to teach it similarly to how we naturally learn language. Growing up we don't learn by grammar and rules, but by listening to others. I make sure they are prepared with everything needed to play songs/pieces, as well as all that is needed for improvisation and solos. My methods are specific for age and advancement. For younger and/or beginner level students I work mostly on ear training. This includes the ability to match pitch, sing a scale in different keys, sing different intervals in different keys, sight-read and rhythm. I set goals with each student getting to know their style preferences, musical tastes and acknowledge their progress throughout the learning. My students will learn to reach their goals and become successful performance artists and musicians.
