I teach for several different schools in the Seattle area in addition to Musika. I've taught mandolin to an elderly woman who wanted to sing German folk songs to her grandkids, I've taught piano and ukulele to kindergartners, I've helped teenagers write their own songs and perform them to peers, and I've helped dads in their thirties to relive the glory days of Shoegaze and Grunge. With all of these students, I've helped them love the subtle, intricate, surprising parts of music and how to not only play music, but have their life enriched by it and share that with others. I believe any student regardless of age has to learn the three fundamentals pillars of music to truly learn an instrument. Those foundations are: Harmony, rhythm, and melody. The way in which I go about teaching them or reinforcing them depends on the age, musical interest, and skill. I enjoy teaching so much because I am able to watch each student develop a passion for music, work towards rewarding careers, and grow a great sense of curiosity. Watching students work through challenges and become excited about music is very rewarding. Students in my studio are encouraged to take on new challenges, but also to learn at their own pace. Thus, I find it great to set the curriculum aside for part of the lesson, either to allow the student some time to show me what else they've been working on, listening to, watching, thinking about, or perhaps to just jam and have fun.
