I also like to ask my students to record their own playing to compare how different the recording sounds from what they usually hear, which helps give them a better sense of what they need to improve and trains their ears to adjust to their tone, pitches, and even tempo. I use different methods for different ages of students. It also depends on how and what the student wants to learn about piano, as well as their future goal which related to music. Every year around November and December, I organize a charity concert called "fusion" in Manhattan, students will be invited to perform at the beginning of the concert as our special guests. Most of the private lessons that I have taught since this time have been for drum set, as that is the more commonly desired area of study for many students seeking private lessons. Of the group lessons I have taught since high school, all of them have been in a school environment, yet have spanned every age and ability of music student. I will vary my methods based on the individual student. For students between 3 and 7, I will use the Suzuki method, which in my experience is best for students of that age. For beginners after that, I will use method books and repertoire that not only addresses the students technical and musical development at that point in time, but is also fun and enjoyable to play. I am very big on learning by ear because it is the way I learned music most of my life.
