I take the great things about the Suzuki Method and use them (fun, creativity, by-ear learning, group jams). Then I take the things I don't like about the method and disregard them (pre-established repetoire, no composition or improv). I teach kids how to concentrate, how to teach themselves, how to ignore distractions, and the philosophy for joyful performance without nervousness. For beginner clarinetists, we will begin working out of the Voxman/Gower Beginner Method Book. We will spend the majority of the first lessons learning posture, holding the instrument, proper embouchure, blowing into the clarinet, breathing techniques, articulation, and how to develop sound through long tones and exercises. During the process, basics of music reading and music theory will be taught. For intermediate to Advanced students, we will learn all scales and arpeggios using the Klose Method book. Read More

As an educator I aim to introduce my students to skills that may be applied to life outside the practice room. I teach them to communicate, build confidence, and most importantly, develop patience. In 2013 I graduated from Bowling Green State University with a master's degree in saxophone performance. Prior to this, in 2011, I graduated from the University of Calgary with a bachelor's degree in the same field.
