Allowing the student to take a measure of control over what they are learning, gives them a bit more ownership of and investment in their lessons. My preferred method for very young students has been the Suzuki method, as I believe a well trained ear continues to be our best musical learning tool later in life as well. When students progress to reading, the full line of Suzuki books can of course be utilized, but it is very advisable to incorporate additional materials and techniques. My professional experience includes assisting piano professors to teach undergraduate students of different abilities, teaching skills that range from basic scales to classical overtures to modern jazz. I also teach beginners how to read sheet music, and communicate with younger students’ parents to make sure they know how the students are progressing. I graduated from Southern Methodist University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, and am currently pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Chamber Music Performance at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
