As well Simandl Book one is a wonderful book to introduce the positions on the bass and has many helpful exercises inside. For beginning students, I typically like to work out of the Rubanks Elementary Flute Method Books. I also like to find repertoire which will interest each student, with solo repertoire and duets. As students progress, I like to work out of the Trevor Wye books as well as Taffanel et Gaubert Daily Exercises. For beginner students, I will introduce the basics of drumming techniques as this is the most important step in becoming a proficient drummer. Once the student has progressed and shown me that they can play simple beats with the proper technique, I will begin introducing them to repertoire appropriate to their skill level to get them to be able to play drums in a more musical manner. If the student is older and/or more experienced, I will likely start with exercises and ideas to build their level of skill within areas of their interest or what I think would benefit them the most. I started studying and practicing as much as I could to learn anything and everything about it. As I progressed I applied Berklee College of Music and was accepted there to continue my studies, and one of the best lessons I learned was that I had an obligation to teach those who weren't given the same opportunities that I was. It is important for both me and my student to have long-term and short-term goals. Long-term goals may have to do with technique--for voice, examples may be releasing tension or singing with proper breath support. Short term goals are more linked to repertoire and can be technical or musical. An example on the piano may be playing through a piece with a particular metronome marking. I have each of my students use a practice log so both the student and I can keep track of short-term goals. Read More
