I am a music coach that helps students push through the frustration that comes with learning something new, to the gratifying victory of reaching personal goals. With typical and non-typically developing students, adaptive lessons are possible with the use of larger picks or adaptive instruments. Everyone learns differently and as a music teacher, I adapt to the needs of my students. My music therapy experience has prepared me to think outside of the box and provide a musical experience that students will enjoy and want to continue into the future. Read More

There is a secret to becoming a great player, and that is to never stop taking lessons and playing music. Most people that you think are amazingly talented has practiced 10,000 hours on their instruments or more. I started lessons on piano and saxophone when I was 9 yeas old and took lessons until I graduated high school. I continued studying music formally in college and on my own. It's a lifelong journey. I have taught private lessons for many decades. My first studio was at the Preparatory Department at my undergraduate conservatory. It was there I discovered the joy of teaching and continued to seek out teaching opportunities. I have held several adjunct college positions and have also taught students between age 6-60. Over the past few years, I have honed my online teaching skills in order to make virtual lessons just as effective as in-person. Read More

Each method has it's own advantages; I like to select a method based on the learning style and needs of the student. I get students into playing many positions earlier than most method books teach with my own system, which aids in perception of the shape-oriented and chordal (voicing) structures that are present in all pieces. The sooner someone grasps the "words" in the language of music, the better the student's reading and comprehension will be. Read More

I borrowed a guitar from a friend and began practicing and learning and playing. Eighteen hours a day every day until I got out of the army. When I got out I traveled from San Francisco to NYC and back plying in a few bands. Read More

For my beginning students, I typically start with either Essential Elements 2000 for strings or Sound Innovations. Both books give younger students a grasp on the fundamentals of technique. As they grow I then introduce solo repertoire by using the Suzuki Books but also like to add a fiddle book. Sometimes students gradually go either to fiddle or to classical. I try and encourage what they are more comfortable with. For adults, I try to find out what genre of music they enjoy and try to gauge their ability level with a couple playing evaluations. Read More
