I begin with determining the objectives of my student. For example, a student may want to work on increasing his/her range, improving tone, learning techniques for a certain style, or may want to establish a repertoire of songs or “90-second cuts” for an audition. With that information, I design a program to meet these objectives. We proceed at a comfortable pace and monitor the goals and objectives often. For my youngest students, age 7 and under, I begin with Adventures in Violinland, a wonderful method written by Shirley Givens, instructor at Peabody Preperatory. This teaches note reading with a solfegg system. It has a strong emphasis on technique. For beginners ages 8 and up, I use either Essential Elements or Sound Innovations, usually matching it with whatever the school district uses that the student lives in. Hello! My name is Michelle and I have been playing the piano for 14 years. I started at a small studio like most children, just out of curiosity as to what kind of interests I could have. I ended up loving playing and performing the piano and gradually developed my skill over time, winning numerous awards and using my skills to participate in church choir and many other volunteer opportunities.
