At the Berklee Day Sessions Summer Program in 2011, I played in and directed ensembles of musicians aged 10-13. I bonded with a guitar player and on the day of the recital, got my first private instruction student for bass guitar. So I like to make sure that I'm always challenging them but never pushing them too hard, helping them get better at their own pace. At the end of each lesson I like to send students with a sheet having their required and suggested practice materials for the next lesson. For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire.
