Instruments: Drums
Growing up in a musical family, I gravitated toward the drums to help round out the family band. My passion for drum set and percussion grew in middle school and high school when I joined concert, marching and jazz bands. I studied music in college, honing my drum set skills with an emphasis in jazz. I graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree in music. While in college, another passion arose: teaching. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
For beginning students who are children, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Piano for Beginners. Progress will depend on the students' willingness to learn and practice as well as encouragement from their parents. For students who already have an understanding of basic fundamentals, I will assess their skill level and select music appropriate for their progression and level of play. Adult beginner students are more than welcome to use piano books. Read More
Instruments: Piano Saxophone Clarinet Oboe English Horn
My teaching experience goes back to when I taught piano lessons in high school. Since then I have continued to teach private lessons throughout college. I now teach music at Kansas City Public Schools. One of the key components to my teaching is helping my students find a way to enjoy making music. I like to provide fun supplemental activities as well as their regular lesson books. I also enjoy finding my students as many performance opportunities as possible so they can show off their hard work! Read More
Instruments: Piano
For beginning students like young students, I typically start with Piano Adventure as the textbook. Once they have progressed of study, I would like to introduce some solo repertoires with beautiful melody line for their recital performance. And in each lesson, I will play the accompany part for young students, which can bring them more fun of learning short pieces, and enjoy studying. For adults, I would like to talk with them, and find out a good way that they are interested in of studying, and give them more space of choosing repertoires for learning. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
I want to give all my students a background in classical music to prepare them for possible further education in music and give them confidence among classically-trained musicians. I also want my curriculum to include non-classical musical styles that each particular student enjoys and relates to. I want to help students accomplish their personal goals (and their parents’ goals) regarding their musical education. Most importantly, I want my students to love playing and/or singing music! Hey there, I'm Sky! I play a lot of instruments, compose scores for TV and games, make beats, produce other people's stuff - if music is involved, I tend to be involved. I've studied with a number of phenomenal teachers in the classical, jazz, and eclectic performance and producing world and my students regularly excel in competitions, ensembles, auditions, and creating/producing their own music! Somewhere along the line, it became obvious that my life is only complete when Im making music. Read More
Instruments: Violin Viola
For beginners I use a method book for learning how to read music and learn music theory. Once the basics are attained I introduce scales and etudes to build on the technical aspects of playing the instrument. Solo books are also added to the repertoire for the student so that they can use everything they have learned thus far and express that in a piece of music. Younger children will not do as much music reading in the beginning of lessons. Read More
