Although my initial emphasis is on the traditional Simandl approach to position playing, once the student has gained an appropriate level of technique, we will focus on the student's stylistic goals and musicianship. I encourage the student to bring other materials to the lesson, for example a school based music assignment or ensemble part or recording or any piece of music that the student wishes to learn. Every student is different, and every student has a different level of ability, interests, etc. I find it's important to be mindful of what each student needs at any given moment in their musical journey. Part of this involves asking vital questions and assessing each student's innate musicality before proceeding with materials. Some kids are very precocious are best suited for materials intended for adult beginners. As far as books go, I prefer the Hal Leonard method, especially for beginner musicians. I combine visual, audio and kinesthetic learning methods to tailor to anyone's needs. I earned my Bachelor of Music Education from Towson University and have spent years working with musicians both inside and outside the classroom. I've taught students from elementary school through adulthood and served as the Head Brass Instructor for the Calvert Hall Competition Marching Band for nearly a decade. During that time, I've worked with students in a program that has earned 5 National Championships and 16 State Championships. I'm also an active performer with ensembles including the Endless Mountain Music Festival Orchestra and Quintet, Reisterstown Jazz Band, and Bachelor Boys Band, along with other ensembles throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
