How one ends is contigent on how they start, so I make sure beginners have proper technique before moving on to repertoire. I will also have beginners go through the Hal Leonard method books to ensure they have the theory necessary to progress. If they are absolute beginners, I like to give a general layout of the map of the instrument and its parts, how they function, where middle C is, and give them a first piece to learn that encompasses a bit of these ideas, slowly incorporating and building their understanding.
