For beginning students, I typically utilize Alfred's Basic Lesson Books to introduce basic theory and concepts. These books incorporate fill-in-the-blank and performance-based assessments to ensure understanding. I also create customized flashcards, worksheets, and games to provide fun and interactive opportunities for individualized learning. As students advance, I assign scales and Hanon finger exercises to strengthen finger strength and skill. For young beginners, I start off with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as they are probably already working in this book if they are in bad at school.  Outside of that, I'll typically incorporate key beginning excercises from the Arban's Book to help develop the students sound and chops.  This was how my first teacher taught me, and I found his methods extremely helpful in my early years.  Once they're fundamentals are developed, I will begin to work on the students first recital. Although my initial emphasis is on the traditional Simandl approach to position playing, once the student has gained an appropriate level of technique, we will focus on the student's stylistic goals and musicianship. I encourage the student to bring other materials to the lesson, for example a school based music assignment or ensemble part or recording or any piece of music that the student wishes to learn. My goal as a teacher is to maximize a students potential, practice intelligently, and explore the utter joy of bass playing together. Read More
