Vocal students are encouraged to pick songs from whatever genre sparks their interest.  With violin and viola I use the suzuki method of training and follow the books and lessons, and I use other books to supplement scales/technique.  If a student already has musical literature I am very open to using that to build a specific curriculum for that student. I like to first get a sense of what the student is hoping to achieve, whether it be learning how read music, having the skills to impress family and friends, or gaining advanced technical and musical skills. Then, I'll ask about the student's previous experience, learning style, and how much time they're willing to dedicate to learning piano. I encourage my students practice at least a minimum of 30 minutes a day. I don't have one particular book I work from as I see every student is different. I do require that they have a theory book because I believe learning the theory is just as important. Regardless of their age, I encourage them to find a piece within their level that they would enjoy learning to play. Read More
