I emphasize the importance of proper posture, technique, the ability to read music, and knowledge of the fretboard. Accordingly, I always assign students exercises meant to develop and strengthen a variety of aspects of both left-hand and right-hand technique. The pace at which we move through the exercises is dependent on the student's own level of motivation and how much practice they do. For beginners, I generally stick with the Faber Method books, as I enjoy their unity of music theory and practical application more than other method series. It is my goal to remove students from methods as soon as possible- somewhere around early intermediate skill level, so that we may engage with more meaningful repertoire from the 'greats', as well as give the students the tools to take agency over their own repertoire choices, including transcriptions of popular media. In my gap year between my bachelor's and master's degrees, I visited a number of elementary and middle schools and worked with students there. At Manhattan School of Music I was a Teaching Artist for both the Arts-in-Education and Distance Learning Programs and have also taught at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp. I taught at Franklin College for three years and have also worked with students at a number of different universities, such as the University of Washington, Pacific Lutheran University, Seattle University, Presbyterian College, and in China at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music and Tsinghua University. In 2015 I graduated magna cum laude from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor's degree in clarinet performance. Upon this time I studied a full year with James Lee Thorpe whom eventually played, toured recorded with Sweet F.A. They released albums with MCA Chrysalis Records.
