My teaching methods are flexible and student-centered. I believe there is no single right way to learn piano, so I adapt lessons to each students age, personality, learning style, and goals. I combine traditional piano fundamentals with creative exploration to keep lessons engaging and accessible. Students may learn through reading music, listening, playing by ear, improvising, singing, or a combination of all of these. I have been teaching since 1998. I love making music fun for my students, while requiring students to learn fundamentals such as music theory and vocal health. Teaching has been part of my life for over 17 years and I hope to continue for at least that many more. I believe music is for everybody and that each individual can improve and learn if they care and make an honest effort. My method varies with each student. I listen to the students needs and use my expertise to help them achieve their goals. For younger students, I use a variety of material but very much like The Royal Conservatory Program. In the age of, "American Idol", "The Voice" and "Glee", everyone wants to be a star overnight. When I see my students improving and chasing their dreams, it fills me with utter joy! I like watching students think critically about what they are doing while working through any incongruencies in their thought process. Each student is different and requires specific teaching styles in order for them to progress efficiently. I have three main books I use; these are my drum 'bibles'. Progressive Steps to Syncopation by Ted Reed, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer by George Lawrence, and Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin. I like to teach fundamentals first, providing a strong basis with which to expand your repetoire. Then I like to emphasize song work. The best part of drumming in my opinion is playing with other instruments, and in addition to playing with recorded music, I encourage my students to find other musicians to practice and even perform with.
