I tell my students you're not studio/performance ready until you can play through a song 10 times without error. I encourage improvisation. I always say if you can count to 4 you can start learning in less than 10 minutes. I stress the importance of practicing every chance a student gets. I feel that it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals and assignments for my students at each lesson. This measurable progression of accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. Of course finding out the students problem areas is also paramount to helping them progress at the fastest rate possible.
