Goals are always tailored to individual student interests. I like to assign practice homework, which is a mix of technical exercises and song-based learning using student-preferred music. I love to watch students peel back the layers of the onion and discover how their favorite artists make music, from learning common chord progressions to transcribing solos note-for-note to imitating playing styles. For my younger students, i would start with the simple lullabies like ABC's and Row Your Boat to get them familiar with the instrument and getting them used to playing what they want to hear. Then we'd move on to Hal Leonard's fundamental books to develop reading skills. For the older students, i'd get an understanding of what their listening to and how they want to play and start to introduce them to essential principles to be the musician they are imagining themselves to be. I have been teaching private piano and voice lessons for over 20 years, and I still love it! I love teaching all ages, beginner thru advanced. As an undergraduate, I was tapped to teach for my university's preparatory music department. After graduation, I started teaching privately, and I've never looked back. In addition to teaching privately, I have also taught music and movement classes, and that experience has helped me learn how to effectively incorporate movement in order to help students learn (especially busy little ones who don't need to be sitting for an entire half hour lesson anyway).
