Methods change depending on a student's level.  I want a beginner to feel completely comfortable being a beginner.  We start with the basics and I adjust material to personal levels of development.  If you have previous experience, we will use the first lesson to assess technique and repetorie and advance from there.  I am aware of several piano workbooks that take you from beginner to level four, these are not always the best for every student. I began teaching in 2003 at my high school during an arts funding crisis that left band students to have sporadic lessons, since we had had an exceptional teacher previously we persevered and excelled in a student-led environment. Luckily by our senior year we had another extraordinary instructor who helped us win first in our district band final, no small feat considering our schools financial hardships and a concert band consisting of only ten students. My favorite part about teaching is watching my students progress. Nothing is better than seeing the progress one makes after a given time. Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at their own pace. Setting goals for themselves can work well but there is no need to rush anything. Learning takes time and especially learning an instrument. Teaching is a step by step process and it takes time, effort and patience. I like to break things down into easily attainable steps and then build from there. This builds confidence and creates a sense of accomplishment. I was taught by Russian, Hungarian, and American teachers. I have been playing violin and viola for over fifteen years, and over the course of that time I have studied piano and theory as well. My piano background has helped immensely in teaching strings, and I highly recommend piano experience for any musician, though I don't require it. I have been teaching for over three years and have greatly enjoyed sharing my passion with students.
