The awareness needed to listen mindfully will set the foundation to enable students to make informed musical decisions on their own. For beginning students who are children, I usually use the Alfred Music Piano Methods series, and include music theory and ear training as a part of the curriculum. Once students have grasped the fundamentals, I will introduce solo repertoire appropriate for receital performances to encourage and motivate their learning. While living in Los Angeles and attending music school I was also teaching bass guitar part time. This was my first time teaching for money although I have been helping many musicians around me since I was young. I have a lot of experience with studio sessions, which requires learning the music and being able to improvise on the fly, while recording. This requires full knowledge of the instrument. I use piano adventures for most students starting off. With my more advanced students I use "The Russian School of Piano." Once the student is at an appropriate level, I then take them out of the books completely. At this time, we work on more difficult pieces in different time periods. Most students start playing Bach's music at first. This is to help the technique. Mozart also is introduced during this time, while this music is difficult, the interpretation is simplistic compared to Rachmaninoff. Read More
