As a kinesthetic learner, I have always had a tendency of using colors, rhymes, similarities, acronyms among other things to ease my learning ability of which I have found myself using a similar method when explaining a concept to one of my students. Setting short and long term goals allow for me and the student to be enthusiastic to learn and eager to step into our next lesson. I only want my students to have a positive experience when leaving our lesson. I am constantly letting them know what they've done well, along with what goals we need to work on. I focus on the sandwich method, which is one positive trait, something to work on, then another positive trait. Everyone is different, so their learning pace is different as well. I do expect them to put at least some effort in at home via practicing (although I know things come up sometimes), otherwise it would be hard to find progress when they haven't practiced what we were working on. Piano students: I usually use the Piano Adventures method, as I find it very methodical and balanced. In each class we do exercises to improve technique, sightreading, and performance along with music theory exercises. In a second part of the lesson we work on the songs having as main goal the creation of a repertoire that the student can play later to family and friends. My greatest interest in music rests in Ethnomusicology. I have a particular passion for traditional Celtic music, and am proficient in the Tin Whistles. I also dabble in traditional Native American flutes, and own instruments from Guatamaula and the indigenous tribes of Alaska. With my teaching comes a deep appreciation for music, the message it sends, and the way that music culture affects the people around us. I use a number of resources to teach students concepts in musical performance. This includes online resources and method books that enhance fundamentals and technique. I do believe that understanding of music theory is necessary to advance beyond the intermediate level, and this system has assisted in training many students over the years.
