Listening to the goals or having the student create goals is a very important first step towards a successful student. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. I am a kind and understanding teacher, pressuring students to reach goals on a time line isn't something that I feel would be productive. Creative teaching and exploring the entire musical world is a life long journey, so no need to rush it, but learning the tools to navigate your way through is something that can be invaluable. Music is a very tough discipline. It will not happen in one lesson, but what will happen is that students will instantly witness progress and this feeling becomes addictive. I challenge my students to practice hard because with that type of discipline the student will not only grow musically, but mentally as a human. I would not be the compassionate person I am today if it had not been for me falling in love with music. Read More

While teaching I emphasize relaxation. Our goal is to achieve the best results with the least amount of effort. This emphasis also prevents injuries, and I've found it always improves the speed at which we learn. My teaching style is always relaxed. Gradually, as the student advances I learn how much I should expect from them and gently push them to expecting more from themselves over time. I am certainly more hard on students aiming to become professionals and play their instrument as a profession than I am on those seeking just to enjoy it as a hobby, but all of these students eventually can play the highest level of music, at their own pace. I have been using the Alfred Method Books for my beginning piano students, as they provide a well-rounded program incorporating theory, technique and performance. pieces.  Intermediate students should, in my opinion, begin to choose the music they want to work on.  I like my students to learn how to read music as well as play by ear, how to practice and how to incorporate theory into performance. Most of all, I want all my students to deeply feel the joy of music making, and discover the vast universe of music that we all can share and enjoy. Read More

For beginner students I like to start away from books and notation and work on sound production and call and response. This is a way to get the ear working and to have some fun with potentially the most daunting part of learning an instrument. Once we have mastered that we move to writen notation and try to match what we have been doing without the book. When a student has progressed towards a good understanding of music notation I will encourage solo repertoire and other projects that are of interest of the students based upon a common goal we have set for our time together. Instruments: Guitar

When I was offered a gig as Billy Joe Royals guitarist it was back on the road. I've also done road work with such notables as The Classics IV and Archie Bell. After the tours I opened a recording studio and for many years I played on many artists' original songs playing guitar, keyboard and bass guitar as needed, as well as did the engineering on the tracks. During this time I began to rekindle my love of teaching guitar and began accepting students again. Read More
