I've discovered over the years that every student is different and require a custom approach tailored to what method works best for them. Some students do very well working through publications of lesson books, while others seem to do better with a less structured approach driven more by listening and muscle memory. In both methods, I find it important to lead by example, not only to be able to show them correctly, but also to inspire them. Read More

From the first lesson, its essential to develop the pupils ability to feel the expressiveness of music with his gradually developing. The basis of teaching piano to beginners is the education of the pupils artistic thought together with his emotional response to musical expressions. Working on music pieces, one-voice or complex ones, I train the students to listen attentively to the musical texture, to create an intelligent reproduction of contents, to feel deeply its musical character I provide stories and games for younger students and metaphors for adults in order to help them understand the meaning of music. Recognizing that each student is unique, i.e., their instruments, learning styles, mental and emotional make-up, etc., I need to be flexible in how I work with each student. There is no one-size-fits-all! I work to understand each student's learning style and adapt my teaching accordingly. I ask a lot of questions, asking the student to think about their own learning style, what they are experiencing, hearing, and feeling. This not only gives me cues on how to better adapt my teaching style to them, but gets them thinking about what they are doing and reinforces their learning, which in turn helps them in their own practice by starting to become their own best teacher. My teaching style is defined by a combination of high standards, understanding, nurture and patience. I will set realistic goals for each student based on his/her abilities. I will encourage and try new ways to explain or demonstrate a skill that the student is having difficulty with and I will be extremely enthusiastic about their accomplishments. However, I will assertively make it known if the student shows that they have not been practicing in a supportive way. Read More

I am a Suzuki and traditional teacher. I encourage public performances as often as possible and will help students identify appropriate opportunities to do so. Students who study with me drive their own education by making choices. You can choose Suzuki or traditional flute lessons. You can choose to focus mainly on classical music, modern music, pop music, or jazz music as suits your tastes. You can choose to pursue goals such as PMEA, college auditions, competitions, or a more casual learning that focuses on improving your skill without competing. Read More

I encourage students to pick the music they want to play. For those who have no prior music knowledge at all, there are numerous beginning methods that are satisfactory. I teach harmony and ear training at a level in agreement with ability of the fingers to execute. It is so nice to learn to play by ear, (starting with very simple tunes) going from the brain to the keyboard without the crutch of the paper score. Of course this is the objective of preparation (study, practice) anyway, so the emotional feeling that the composer intended can be experienced and interpreted (and communicated to the audience) in a wonderful, magical way.
