For all students, I start off with the basic fundamentals. Proper setup, posture, stick position, and technique. I then will hand write some examples and assess the student. From there I usually will use Alfred's Beginning Drum Set Method. Once the student has a grasp on that, I will focus on rudimental drumming and snare rhythms to accompany the drum fill portion of the Alfred's book. From there we move into more advanced books that include jazz drumming and complex rock beats as well as learning popular songs of the student's choice. Read More

For more formal styles, I will use traditional methods created by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, Frederick Noad etc.. My philosophy of teaching is that lesson materials must match the students interests and ability. Recently I did a practice flute challenge for my students, they were rewarded with a gift card if they completed the number of minutes they needed for 4 weeks. As for older teens, young adults and adults, I usually teach from the acclaimed method book: Hal Leonard’s Music Guitar Method. These books are structured from Volume 1 through Volume 3.
