My methods of teaching are primarily based on the individual. Within the first lesson, I make an assessment of the individuals musical abilities, and document the genres of music that interests the student. I then create a curriculum based on that assessment, which includes music theory, building repertoire (including music that interests the student), and music history/literature. In 2012 I started teaching students in their homes. I quickly learned the ins and outs of teaching and have never looked back. In the fall of 2013 I gained additional experience while teaching music to kids at Ideal Day Care center. At first I was unable to engage the students, but soon I was the star teacher at the day care center. My program involves using Essential Elements Books, Suzuki Books/Methods, Scale Books, and Dotzauer Books.Weekly instructions include: practicing scales, skill builder exercises and concentration on individual students' solo selections. Students repertoire includes traditional music books, skills book, etudes and songs. Suzuki Essential Elements are books of choice for music. The foundation of my teaching is based on listening, which sounds simple. But, it's not always easy! The awareness needed to listen mindfully will set the foundation to enable students to make informed musical decisions on their own. Additionally, practicing is an art form in and of itself, and it's much more than playing pieces over and over again. Practicing efficiently requires listening, of course, and problems solving skills. I began playing trumpet at a very young age, and have found it, and music in general, to be the most valuable means of communication available to us. I graduated from University of Maryland School of Music December 2014, and have played in a number of bands (both jazz and classical), taught private lessons, and worked as a festival clinician for local schools.
