I began teaching music while I was in college. Although I was not an education major, I did take education classes and learned a lot about pedagogy during my time in college. I have experience teaching beginning percussion-intermediate percussion on mallet instruments, snare drum, timpani, drum set, and orchestral percussion. My interest in a variety of musical styles has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of great musicians from different backgrounds. It has also opened my eyes to a variety of ways of thinking about music. I received a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance from Bowling Green State University in 2012. My style of lesson is like water.. No two students are alike. I must first test a beginner to see if they're tone deaf.. An advanced student is tested for any limitations or handicaps. Any good coach would study the student for any weakness, and formulate a viable plan to bridge the gap again to take them further faster.. My approach to lessons differs significantly from student to student. After initial skills and/or vocal health assessments, I choose repertoire and books for them based upon their abilities, age, and musical interests. While I think that vocalises and technical exercises are important to the learning process, I believe it is essential for students to be singing and playing music that they are passionate about at all times.
