I spend about a third of the lesson on specific technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well. Since I was young, I loved teaching my friends and even got a couple of them to start learning the violin so that we could all play together. My teaching emphasizes practical drumming skills that get students off their feet quickly if they are a beginner, and help move beyond technique and shape musicianship if they are an intermediate player.
