For beginner students I like to start away from books and notation and work on sound production and call and response. This is a way to get the ear working and to have some fun with potentially the most daunting part of learning an instrument. Once we have mastered that we move to writen notation and try to match what we have been doing without the book. I often ask students to tell me what they can find throughout the pieces based on the knowledge they have and what they have acquired through the lessons.
