I grew up in a household that flourished with multiple music genres which led me to really try and be versatile in regards to creating music. I first played the drums in middle school where I never read music, only played back what was told. By the time I got to High School, I knew it was necessary to be able to understand theory and by practicing throughout my years in High School, I was able to sustain a successful audition with the school's jazz band. My approach to teaching is, basically, that playing piano should be enjoyable and fun so I tailor the lessons to the type of music in which the student has interest. I do, however, have a basic structure that includes reading music, finger dexterity and songs at the student's playing level. While I am happy to help set some basic goals and will assign work to do outside of our lessons, I believe that long term goals are our own. I vary my methods according to student level, age, and practice habits. For example, for the advanced high school student I often mold my teachings around college audition requirements and all-state, regional band auditions. Otherwise, particularly for younger styudents, I am not very performance oriented. I think it is more important to learn to "play" at music rather than plan and prepare for multiple recitals.
