For beginner students, I usually start off with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once they start to progress. I will move them on to some songs / tab books by their favorite artist. For Intermediate students, I will move them to Guitar Fretboard Workbook by Hal Leonard, as well as Arpeggios for the Modern Guitarist, and a signature Lick book. Once they started to become Advance. I'm new to teaching on this level, but I do have some prior experience, most notably a paid tenure teaching a family friend for a summer. My student was very young and a novice, so I primarily utilized both formal methods for the understanding of fundamentals of music theory and technique, though I also helped her learn to play a few popular songs at her request. Letting students pursue their own personal interests in music in addition to teaching them the fundamentals is important to me, but with more experienced students I generally tend to focus more on improvisation and harmony as opposed to sightreading. I have recently learned bass guitar as well. I encourage students to practice at least 20-30 minutes a day because even that little amount of time makes all the difference. I also love to incorporate creativity in my lessons with songwriting and improvisation. I also encourage students to participate in recitals as well. My teaching experience dates back to the 1980's where I have taught Music Classes involving singing of worship music in religious elementary schools as well as teaching music theory, and music history. I was also a preschool teacher and taught preschool music enrichment classes. After school hours I enjoy teaching in my own home music studio, but due to pandemic have now switched to online music lessons. I work with one of three methods books: Mel Bay, Hal Leonard, or the Berklee Guitar Method. I gauge this based on the age, skill level, and their time available to practice. Mel Bay is the easiest method to begin, whereas Berklee is more advanced and moves at a faster pace. Sometimes I slow Berklee down and combine it with Mel Bay as a teaching strategy (Mel Berklee, perhaps?). I also am not afraid to use alternative teaching methodologies or notational systems, such as tablature and internet resources, as I think these are vital materials that are relevant to how people interact with, consume, share, and learn music today.
