As a tutor, I assigned homework regularly and kept students accountable by checking for completion and accuracy. When it comes to learning how to play an instrument, the importance of practicing regularly on one's own cannot be emphasized enough. For beginning students I try to go slow and make sure that they get the fundamentals and essentials down. My beliefs are that learning each stage well will help expedite the process of learning and playing later in life. At some point shortly after the fundamentals we will begin on solo literature and possibly duet literature. As far as method books go, I like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements (I've used those methods a lot when teaching middle school band) for young students, Hanon's exercises and Bela Bartok's Mikrokosmos for intermediate piano, and trips to Guitar Center for adult guitarists (I'm serious: John Petrucci has a great method for Rock Guitar, for example). Since I have an Administrators degree and have concentrated on many Healthcare/Science classes regarding disabilities, I can tailor my lessons to students who may be dyslexic or have ADHD. Some students are visual learners, where others respond more to sound. For younger students who are energetic, I love to incorporate games and activities to keep them engaged while we continue to learn important aspects on the violin.
