I think we all learn best when having fun, so I keep things light. For younger folks, I encourage practicing daily, but with a light touch. For older musicians, you decide how much you want to practice and progress. I emphasize comfort while playing and I have many tools and ideas to help with that. Regular lessons help so much with motivation. If you are interested in jazz improvisation, I have a some tested ideas that work. Read More

For my beginning students, I will typically teach out of the Sound Innovations methods books and incorporate certain lessons from other method books as well. After a foundation has been established, I will introduce solo repertoire and begin to work toward recitals and local competitions. I introduce concepts from a variety of composers, styles, and periods, but I also want to encourage the child's love for music so I take into account what things they have heard and possibly want to learn. I began teaching professionally in the Bay Area about 30 years ago. I have taught in a variety of settings includings classes, group lessons, in music stores, for school districts, at students' homes and in my own private studio. Every person learns differently and I am highly skilled at detecting this and using it to my students' advantage. My recitals not only present individual pieces, but also group works that encourage working together with other musicians which is a highly rewarding benefit of music. Read More

If the student in not a beginner, advanced or intermediate I have to do a performance ability assessment. Read More

I have been teaching for 20 years, with my own business for 10 years. My teaching style is very student centered. This allows me to focus on their unique abilities and interests while building a solid musical foundation. Individualized teaching is my passion. I adapt my teaching style to each students' learning style and then teach them how to express themselves individually through music. I still use traditional methods to build good technique and practice habits, but allow my students to bring their own interests' into our lessons. Read More

I use the Suzuki method which is an ear training method that trains the students to play familiar songs without having to read music. I teach them to read music afterwords. Much of my teaching method revolves around improvisation and experimentation. I use these techniques to get a feel for my students and then personalize the lessons to what suits their particular needs. Read More

After all this has to have some fun it too. Determining the range of an individuals learning styles and how they operate allows me to better gauge their needs and accomplishments. whether I should be quite literal, or use analogies, metaphors and similes. Knowing a students aural depth helps me guide listening. An idea of kinetic aptitude and tendencies helps me construct the "procedural memory" of playing efficiently. Being aware of pattern recognition visual acuity gives a baseline in reading skills along with horizontal and vertical range of focus. Read More
