The most rewarding thing for a teacher is seeing the student progress, does not matter to me if it's perfect! Music takes time and practice and it's very much like a painting. You are not gonna be done in a whole day, you add a little everyday. I only ask my students to set aside 15-30 minutes a day to practice. I am very focused when teaching but I try not to bore the student with repetitive exercises, varying the material constantly, depending on the student. Some students are more focused than others and they're able to endure greater amounts of effort into a single task. No two students are the same, and I try to take each student's strengths, goals and preferences into account when designing their custom curriculum. For brass, I devise custom exercises for the player in addition to using classic pedagogical texts such as the Arban's and Clarke books. For piano, I start students off with a combination of scale work and repertoire. All lessons with me will include learning a wide variety of repertoire as well as a fair bit of improvisation, as I believe it is an invaluable tool for developing ears, creativity and musical personality. For beginners I usually begin with Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone and Fundamental Studies for Snare Drum by Garwood Whaley. Once the student has a good grasp on basic reading and technique, I usually introduce rudiments and start working on solo or play along repertoire. However, if the student or parent has another book they feel would be better for their growth, I am always open to suggestions.
