My method varies greatly depending on the student. I don't use method books with voice students, since the voice is so personal. I don't believe there's any such thing as a "one size fits all" method--lessons should be designed to meet the needs of the individual. For older students, I want to know what kind of music they enjoy playing or listen to, and guide them along to reach their goals--whether that be to play in a band, write and record an album, or just become a better player! I have been teaching for 10 years on various levels. I've taught part-time in high schools as a college student, music stores, as well as privately. I love to build a curriculum that is specific to each student's needs. I.e. I like to work with students and help them reach the goals that they have set for themselves. For younger beginning student I prefer to use Essential Elements for a good foundation. For older beginners I prefer the Rubank Method. Once the basics are grasped I add in level appropriate solo music. As the students progress I move either into the Rubank Method for younger students or the Trevor Wye method for the older students. My teaching experience began while attending graduate school 30 years ago. I have been teaching consistently in my home studio and with the Liya Foundation Summer Music Camp for the past 6 years. At the Liya Summer Camp, I conduct private lessons, sectionals, and assist with orchestra rehearsals. I am a patient, fun loving violin instructor who believes in stretching a student's growth. I emphasize disciplined, consistent practice to improve skills but do not expect perfection. In my opinion, no one ever completely masters the violin. Read More
