For beginning cello students who are children, I typically start with Suzuki method elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I believe that learning is incredibly individualized. Each student will have specific goals and ways of understanding instruction. Because of this, I believe that teaching should be just as individualized. I aim to teach each student in what ever way will best support them in their learning, rather than forcing all students to learn in one uniform way. I had begun teaching flute lessons during my undergraduate degree, and have more than 10 years of experience. I have taught private lessons in my own studio, also at afterschool institutes/programs such as Orchepia School of Music in Diamond Bar, CA, and Kid's Orchestra in Baton Rouge, LA. I believe that if the student is capable of reading and learning the repertoire quickly, he or she will become much more motivated and the act of practicing will be something pleasant. I like my students to fell they practice because they like to, and not only because they have to.
