After graduating high school, I went to attend Montclair State University's Jazz program. For younger beginners I usually use books that feature simple arrangements of children songs and folk tunes as the basic musical material. I'm hands-on, affirming, and challenging at the same time: I believe in gently recognizing areas of improvement, which we work on through fostering a positive, "no-wrong-answers" approach. I create a safe space for my students and encourage them to explore all areas and facets of the instrument; in doing so, students are then able to express themselves more dynamically in classical music, and to improvise more creatively in jazz. It's important to set real and specific goals so the progress can be noticeable, working at each students pace. I find encouragement and acknowledgment of accomplishments is essential when I teach.
