For beginning students, I like to focus and builds traditional "executive skills" such as embochure, posture, hand position, ear training, and articulation. Once the student has a grasp of fundamentals, I introduce scales and solo repertoire appropriate to their development. For advanced students, I focus on building upon their knowledge of scales, etude methods, harmony and chordal progressions, as well as solo repertoire--while incorporating elements of improvisation, extended techniques, and electronics.  I play duets with each of my students regularly! Instruments: Double Bass

I use fingering and shifting exercises, and intonation exercises handed down to me by my college/symphony teachers. I focus heavily on playing comfortably, to avoid developing physical tension due to bad playing habits. If my student is a jazz player I work on walking bass lines and melodic improvisation. My philosophy is that the bassist should be able to play high and low, fast and slow, with physical comfort, in order to play all styles of music. Read More

I began teaching while in college and have now been teaching for 11 years.  My students have ranged in age from 3-60.  Since getting my Suzuki Flute certification in 2008,  I have found the Suzuki method a great way to start young beginners.  In addition to giving private lessons, I taught group flute classes for 3 years with the Harmony Program  My students are encouraged to participate in ensembles, competitions and recitals as having such goals is a great motivation for practice and musical growth.
