I start usually with Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber including Technique and Artistry Book, Theory book and Lesson Book . Additional solo repertoire might include Faber books on Jazz and Blues or Musical Theatre or Classics for children. Adults may start with Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course. I tend to custom the lesson plans related to the students interests too . I started teaching voice in college and have taught piano in high school. For each I have about a little over year of experience. I want my students to use their musical skills as much as possible to give them motivation to practice and satisfaction in their newfound abilities. I am very passionate about music, both listening and performing. I perform regularly around the Twin Cities and the midwest. I recently received my Bachelors degree from Winona State University in Music Business and Jazz studies. I have toured with various groups and recorded several albums. I am constantly learning new things on the guitar and mandolin. I am classically trained but also study various forms of popular music. As a teacher, I've learned so much from my colleagues and peers, but likely not as much as I've learned from my students. I've found that some teaching practices are outdated and I think I can bring a fresh and modern perspective to teaching music. I like to base my lessons around the student's natural curiosity and desire for learning music. Whether that be trying to play in the school band or wanting to learn a Led Zeppelin song, I believe that giving my students this ability to make their own decisions, helps them become more confident, motivated, and passionate about succeeding as a musician as well as in their own personal lives. For me, voice teaching is all about the individual. Unlike a violin, trumpet, piano, or other instrument of a fixed size and shape, voices come in all shapes and sizes. Each students physiology and psychology is different and responds better to different stimuli/approaches. In singing, our bodies are our instruments!
