Overview:
Hello! I am an active clarinetist and teacher located in the Twin Cities. I have just completed my DMA in Clarinet Performance at the University of Minnesota. I have a wide experience performing solo, chamber and orchestral music performing in various genras, from classical music to more modern and some types of folk classical music. I am also a member of Sonora Ensemble who's main mission is to bring Polish classical music to the communities throughout Minnesota as well as other places. I enjoy teaching clarinet, piano and music theory. I believe that teaching helps to grow you as a musician and improve your playing.
EXPERIENCE
I have experience teaching clarinet all ages and different levels (from the beginners to a more advanced). Through this I developed the ability to better understand the learning process for students who may or may not have much experience with music or have more or less developed music skills. Since myself I have been exposed to a few different cultures, I became more flexible with having more methods and approaches for teaching. I also accompany on the piano to my beginner students since I have some piano skills as well (if there is a piano available at the lesson location). I am currently teaching Music theory (group classes) and clarinet at the Kramers School of Music and clarinet at the Rubinstein Academy. It always motivates me as well as a teacher and performer to see my students learn, improve, overcoming the obstacles that we all face and move to a new level.
METHODS USED
I believe in finding its own method for each student. Sometimes it takes a lesson or 2 to understand the student's motivations and find a path to make learning and playing an instrument enjoyable, fun and productive and progressive at the same time. For clarinet beginners, I start with Fred Weber's method book which has pretty simple melodies and is easy to follow and understand and all kids very enjoy it. It goes very gradually from lesson to lesson and kids have a chance to practice sight reading, practice their counting and gain rhythmic stability. I also add up some other tunes with piano accompaniment early on. It is also fun to play with piano, you can hear how your part is not just one line but can have a harmony which helps to learn better music sonorities and develop musicality. For more advanced students, I have a few books of studies and etudes that I ask them to implement in their practicing, as well as scales and working on the pieces, band music, etc.
LESSON STYLE
My main method is to be in the middle between having a discipline, encouraging to practice regularly, stay focused but at the same time to remain curious about the process and not let the students develop the habit where they need to practice because they need to. With some older students I try to be somewhat specific and explain what are the things we are working on, why we are working on this, and how to archive it. This helps them to remember the process better and develop some independency in their own practicing for their future.
