Age and maturity/attention span of the student will help to determine which books to select. Often a generally creative adolescent will prefer picture books of music to begin with. I always start with what the student is interested in. I find that learning music comes much more naturally when the student is inspired and entertained by what they are trying to learn. I come from a long tradition of learning music by ear. I believe this is the best way to develop true musicality. While I very much see the value in sheet music, I believe that reading music without being about to play it by ear is like being about to write and write but not speak and understand English. For beginning students who are children, there are multiple method books I have worked with like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Accent on Achievement. These books are great for children to get started with the basics and work on their technical study. For adults, they could use those same methods books or the goal would be to find what the students interests are and explore different materials around that. At the end of day, music should be fun!
