I start my beginning students off with learning to read music notation simply from a rudiment sheet and moving into a cd play a long book with basic drum rhythms and song structure. For intermediate to advance students, I typically start with Stick Control for the snare drummer by George Stone. For basic drum set we start with "The Rhythm Book" covering all drum set styles. I've had great teaching experiences since I've been teaching. I teach students the basics and then work on their own music. This keeps the student interested, keeping them wanting to practice. I believe practice is the key to success. I also teach music reading which helps the student to learn how to see music on the page. There is always new material coming out and I will also write my own technical exercises if the student needs them. For beginning students, I always start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. I've found this book to be the best at introducing the instrument and reading the music. I may or may not continue teaching out of the books (there's 3), but that depends on the student. By book 2 or 3 I usually begin introducing Suzuki, as there are many solo pieces for them.
