As said above, number one in my mind is meet the student where they are. I want to find a way to be not only a teacher for a student, but a way to be a mentor. Students spend years with teachers and they can very quickly become such an important component and role model. If there's a single thing I want my students to learn, is to love music. Read More

I believe in encouragement, fun and positive focus on the students progress at whatever speed that they progress. This makes each student look forward to each lesson with eagerness and actually accelerates their progress. I never push a student and instead encourage and edify the student and try to use their own favorite pieces of music to keep them excited about their next lesson. Acknowledging small progress is the key and I never let a student leave without celebrating their accomplishments no matter how small! Read More

I have for the past twenty-two years been working as a Music Educator, Administrator, Jazz composer and performer. The last eleven of those years have been in the San Francisco Bay area at Oakland School for the Arts, teaching and leading large jazz ensembles, orchestra, small groups and music theory classes for grades 6-12. As Chairman of the Instrumental Music Department, I was responsible for teaching and developing music curricula, developing new programs, recruiting and auditioning new students, presenting and speaking with incoming parent groups, writing and developing the school A-G requirements, and meeting with community schools and faculty to create meaningful collaborations. I prefer tailoring my teaching approach to suit the individual's interests. When I initially began taking lessons, my primary focus was on learning how to play Death Metal. However, my instructors were unable or uninterested in guiding me through that genre. Unfortunately, this led me to discontinue formal lessons for a while. It was only years later, through my own musical experiences, that I started recognizing the close relationships between different genres. Read More

My formal training and music abilities have led me towards a versatile path in the understanding of music. I am passionate about world cultures, and like to incorporate the elements of ancestry and sound healing in my own work. My role as composer sparked at an early age, when I first took the guitar and begun my first conscious and ever intuitive journey of channeling music and sound. In 2017, I was commissioned to score a full length modern dance production, choreographed and directed by Enrique Faundez, (Santiago, Chile). Read More
