I started playing guitar when I was about 12 years old for one reason: I loved music and wanted to be just like the musicians in the bands I was interested in. Over the years I've learned a lot about what it takes to be a real performing guitarist and I am interested in helping students realize their dreams of starting bands and discovering the joy of performing and playing with other like-minded musicians. I allow students to work at their own pace while also setting realistic attainable goals. I want students to feel relaxed during their lessons so I try to establish an atmosphere that's both informal yet studious. One of my top priorities as a teacher is to understand what a student is most interested in and then focus our lessons on what they love. The best way to understand technique and theory is to apply it to something that you enjoy so I always try to attain this! Read More

If they are younger students, I'll use Mel Bay or Hal Leonard books, but sometimes I will make a custom book that builds with their development and learning style. I'm a passionate artist who took the leap from a financial career to creative education! I graduated UT with a degree in mathematics and started working as a retirement consultant. The three years of my financial career was new and intimidating, but my love for art and music was always comfortable and freeing. I chose to leave a lucrative career once I found that building a relationship with students and sharing my knowledge was not only more rewarding, but fun and exciting as well. Read More

For students older than 10 years of age, I will typically move into introducing basic chord and scale playing. I have found that students who are in the middle school to high school range have already developed an appreciation for some form of pop music, be it modern or older material from decades past. By introducing scales and chords, a student can progress into the realm of being able to learn, and eventually performing their favorite songs. Read More

I'll begin by asking about your goals and aspirations to design the curriculum around your playing level. As a beginner student, we may start with left right hand coordination and instrument positioning, we'll work on motor skills and get started on developing fun practice habits. As we progress, we'll begin to apply concepts in a musical context by learning progressions to popular songs and analyzing why they work. We'll jam, play off of one another and begin to sing what we play. Read More
