For young, beginning students, I typically start with teaching basic playing technique and note reading through simple songs, in order to ensure the student has a grasp of the fundamentals of playing and reading. After this point, I introduce chords and scales and more advanced songs, in order to further develop the student's playing and reading capabilities. I start beginning students with both a method book and a blank manuscript which we use to journal weekly. The method book is to instill a variety of fundamental skills while the manuscript (or materials saved and shared in google drive) is used to be a fun way of focussing and developing each student's individual trajectory. We'll eventually try out different picking patterns with these chords and some simple songs that utilize them. For more experienced students I will present some chords and scales and determine what level they are on and take it from there.
