Though I am a recent graduate, I've had a hand full of students over the years. I've been teaching for 2 years now and have loved it ever since. I have always encouraged students to practice regularly, which has lead to them progressively becoming proficient at their instrument. Not only that, but to never take anything less as a stylistic choice. It's a constant conversation, so both my students and I learn from each other. Read More

There are often good lessons that go along with these pieces, and I pick pieces that are famous for good reason! For students of any level, it is useful to have a combination of repertoire that is more challenging, and pushes my students to see beyond their current skill level, as well as repertoire that allows them to enjoy the expression that is possible with their current skill level. There are 4 components to every lesson, and for me, every practice sessions as well: warm up exercises, technical exercises, repertoire, and play (aka performing the repertoire, improvising, writing music, etc). Therefore, strong emphasis is placed on being able to become calm, relaxed yet thoughtful and imaginative when playing. I also believe that a lesson serves four purposes. 1) Learning 2) Modeling 3) Experimenting and 4) motivating. True learning; however, occurs between lessons, so the most important thing is to motivate students to want to practice between lessons. This is the most important challenge -- for this reason, no matter how intense the lesson gets, it is important that students leave the lesson feeling confident and good about themselves NO MATTER WHAT. With regards to performance, I have primarily played religious music though the Williamson Jazz club has been performing since 2017. Read More

I began teaching guitar in high school to middle school students and continued teaching children and adults throughout college. While in music college, I grew to start to teaching bass guitar as well as drums. My teaching style is focused yet fun. Me and my students always have a good time through my curriculum of theory and how it relates to music they enjoy. Whether it’s finding music theory in Taylor Swift song, or learning the guitar neck through a Beatles solo, I always find a way to teach through interests that the students have rather than force a cookie cutter approach. For children I tend to teach songs by The Beatles as standard curriculum, as well as learning to read music proficiently. The things tend to be non-negotiable unless the parent informs me otherwise. For teens and pre-teens reading music is optional as well as the types of songs you wish to learn or the theory you wish to learn. That's just a general overview, along the way we learn all types of riffs, vamps, chords, scales, etc., to which we follow my standard development method, but never neglecting your own personal interests in music. I have been teaching music since graduating with a Bachelor's degree in music education in 1991. While I have had an active performing career, I have always had more of an interest in teaching. I have taught privately in my own music studio, taught elementary music and choir, high school music theory and guitar, published my own series of method books and given seminars to teachers on developing their own guitar programs as well as infusing technology into their lessons.
