In regards to teaching style, I am persistant with practice, while understanding of ability. This is a method that is applied by setting goals and following a direction that introduces and builds upon ideas, all while taking the student's progress and aptitude into account. I often try to balance out the harder, sometimes tedious work of technique and theory with songs that the student requests or shows interest in playing. Read More

In my lessons, I value both exploring self expression and introducing new concrete information in each lesson. Self expression can manifest in picking songs we learn, learning how to improvise, exploring dynamics and tone quality, song writing, and countless other ways! Play and performance are very important to the learning process and are great ways to explore the skills my students acquire. I always encourage my students to seek out performance opportunities, the world needs your voice! Read More

My style of teaching is straightforward, fun, focused and also enthusiastic with many years of real life experience behind it. I love teaching in general, and to combine that with something so creative and expressive, is a dream come true! What gets me excited and sustains my passion for teaching is when there are challenges and the student breaks through them and gains knowledge, confidence and hopefully some “life tools” they can bring out into the world. I have taught guitar since my time at Berklee, when teaching was a side-career that I wanted to explore. My students were accepted into TCNJ, Wiliam Paterson, and Berklee. I felt that teaching was a viable path and something I was passionate about. I decided to pursue teaching in higher education, completing my Masters and enrolling in a PhD program with the intention to teach in academia. I find teaching guitar very rewarding, and I love working with students of all ages and backgrounds! Read More

For my string students learning violin, viola or cello I typically use the Suzuki method books. There are times that I might recommend the Essential Elements series for those who are just starting off, but at some point I switch the student over to Suzuki. Another supplemental book I encourage my students to get when they get to a certain level is Essentials for Strings. This is primarily a scale book, but it also contains a number of other helpful exercises and resources. Read More

While I absolutely have my own style and methods, I tend to follow a student centered approach, basing my teaching on what they need, and the kinds of goals, auditions, and performances they have coming up. I also specialize in teaching marching music for anyone that is overwhelmed by their experience in marching band or is looking to begin a career in drum corps. Lastly, I've worked with beginning guitar and ukulele students. Read More

I am adaptable to what interests and clicks with you as a musician, so if you want to dive deep into music theory, including music notation, harmony, advanced rhythms, awesome. If you would rather learn by ear and reading basic chord charts and lead sheets, no problem. Regardless, I like to start with establishing good form and a basic understanding of musical terms. From there, well look at the music that inspires you and craft a strategy to increase your comfort and proficiency in that area. Read More
