My style of teaching is straightforward, fun, focused and also enthusiastic with many years of real life experience behind it. I love teaching in general, and to combine that with something so creative and expressive, is a dream come true! What gets me excited and sustains my passion for teaching is when there are challenges and the student breaks through them and gains knowledge, confidence and hopefully some “life tools” they can bring out into the world. I have been studying and playing music since I was 7. I began on saxophone in my school's concert band and jazz band proceded by my own musical endeavors on electric bass playing rock and jazz music. I spent high school gigging Philadelphia with The Paisley Haze Quintet. In my undergrad studies at University of Vermont, I picked up the upright bass, studying both jazz and classical styles. I became heavily active in the Burlington, VT music scene performing with such groups as: The Object Three, Nuevos Comediantes, Divine Lorraine, Anna Pardenik and the Holy Smoke-Off, Brass Balagan, Duke Aeroplane and the Wrong Numbers, and Grup Anwar. My Teaching Methods (or those which I employ) are based on the needs of the particular student. Each student is different, and hence, my method is essentially pick and choose depending on the talents, needs, and advancement of the student. For complete beginners, I use a selection of publications from Gendai Guitar (Japanese method book), Frederick Noad (Classical Guitar Playing Volumes 1 2; his three volumes based of historical periods: Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical respectively); tried-and-true Historical Methods (Carcassi, Aguado, Padovec, etc.). I like to give the students the tools to become their own teachers. As their private teacher, my goals are threefold: firstly, to help them build an understanding of the fundamentals of their instrument, including relevant techniques, posture, etc. Secondly, to help them build an understanding of musical concepts and of musicianship in general, including melody, harmony, rhythm, basic theory, etc. Thirdly, to help them cultivate a vibrant practice and playing program, including optimizing fun while practicing otherwise dry material, scaffolding their learning to extrapolate on what they already know, and giving them the tools to improve and develop with or without a teacher. I am new to the guitar teaching game, but I will provide an effective and fun lesson plan. I have had various guitar teachers in my earlier days and have a very good understanding of what works for teaching students guitar. If you give me the opportunity, I will prove that I am probably better than most of the teachers with years of experience. I started playing music on trumpet and had many achievements on that, but fell in love with the guitar and am extremely passionate about passing on my knowledge of music and the guitar to students who want to learn. My strategy generally is to focus on fundamentals as well as effective strategies for practicing at home. I have found that most improvement happens at home in your living room on your 3rd or 4th practice session of the week, which is one of the most fulfilling feelings in the world. Lessons then become a pit stop for encouragement, updating goals and strategies, and learning a little of the why behind the what (music theory). Read More

My methods vary from student to student. I believe strongly in making sure students are learning what they want to learn and adapting to every students needs! While I will employ different techniques with each student, I do tend to use several concepts universally. I like to use a Kodly based system to teach all styles of music. All music is taught through internalization by listening and analyzing and then emulation of what is heard. Read More
