In 2010, I graduated from VanderCook College of Music with a Bachelor's in Music Education. My methods vary according to the student.  If the student is less than 12 years old, I like to use the Hal Leonard Method 1 book.  If the student is 12 or older, I may still use the Hal Leonard book, but I assess the students goals, and find out what they would like to learn.  Whatever style of music the student is interested in learning, I believe in teaching proper posture and sound technique.  For anyone interested in learning classical guitar, I recommend a book titled Pumping Nylon by Scott Tennant. I don't teach out of method books. I will write notes during the lesson and give them to the student, and sometimes give them websites to look up or other resources I feel would be helpful. I like to teach the student how to play songs from bands that they like, or whatever else they are interested in. I find that not having a book allows us the freedom to take the lessons in any direction that we want, without having to follow a set path. Read More

My style is very "goal-oriented," and I will teach students to set short-term goals, medium goals, and then demonstrate to them how reaching the short and medium-term goals leads to accomplishing long-term goals. This system allows students to remain motivated and track their progress as efficiently as possible.
