For small children, I like to teach from the same book I first learned how to play guitar from. But, for older students, I like to base our lessons on their interests. Generally, I will ask a student if there is a song they really like. If so, we will learn the song by ear, or by sheet music for those interested, and break down all of its pieces. I do not introduce music notation usually until the fifth or sixth lesson. I believe that kids learn faster when they beginning learning by call and response or like many call imitation. My first paid show was when I was 9 years old and got to play percussion for Chuck Mangione. I made $200 and I was hooked. I knew this what I had to be doing. I've toured the united stated with Buckets and tap Shoes and other artists, toured Japan in 2012 and was given the opportunity to play at the famous Blue Note, Body and Soul and other jazz clubs. I use All for Strings, Suzuki, Klengel (scales) at the beginning level. I proceed to Concerto repertoire, Popper, Dotzauer etc. The usual classical repertoire. I will also transcribe popular pieces or pieces that the student enjoys to really increase motivation. I also test weekly to inform students of where their practice ability is at and what they need to improve on.
