As soon as I meet with a student or a group of students, I make sure they are welcomed by an energetic teacher before getting started on their lesson. I try to keep the student(s) engaged by showing them different ways and approaches to music from books and my own personal approaches to help them grow knowing their teacher is well experienced. My primary goal is to fill the student with the love of guitar and the passion to continue and grow. This is accomplished by continuing to challenge the student while keeping the process as interesting and fun as possible. I encourage the student to choose songs they want to work on rather than my dictating the music. I am an enthusiatic and experienced instructor and I want to share my passion with others. I graduated with my Bachelors of Music in Music Composition from Indiana University in 2004. In 2013, I graduated from the University of Redlands with a Masters degree in Guitar Performance. As well as being an experienced instructor, I am also a seasoned performer. I have an eclectic and extensive musical palette and have found myself performing in everything from classical guitar recitals as both a soloist and ensemble player, in pit orchestras, small jazz combos, folk music duos and pop music groups. My approach to teaching guitar is roughly the same to students of all ages. I start with the very basics, assuming they know nothing about guitar. So I discuss the parts of the guitar and their functions. I teach how to tune in various ways. I like to use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method book 1, which covers what I have already described. I have coached for Harmony Project, Youth Orchestra Los Angeles and many others, as well as Drum and Bugle Corps and Marching bands throughout California.
