Every student is different.  Music Theory, various styles and forms and performance are all important and part of the main focus.  I also like them to learn songs and styles that they enjoy. It's important for them to pick up their instrument every day, develop their calluses and coordination.  I find this not only encourages them to play and explore more on their own, but keeps their focus on developing their own style. It is important to me that each student feels comfortable during their lessons. I am very patient and understanding; I fully believe that a low-pressure environment helps students to thrive. I began teaching when I was 16 years old at a studio in Dearborn Heights. I have since worked at several studios around the metro-Detroit area and since 2012 have been teaching out of my home and online. I am a pianist, composer, and pre-service Music Educator from Flint, MI. I have played piano and trumpet for 11 years, and am currently in my senior year of getting my BME from The University of Michigan-Flint. Piano, composition, and teaching are my passions, and I have performed extensively throughout the mid-Michigan area, including on the Whiting stage, as a live musician for Michigan Radio's Stateside, as well as conducting several of my own compositions with various ensembles at the Flint School of Performing Arts. I take the great things about the Suzuki Method and use them (fun, creativity, by-ear learning, group jams). Then I take the things I don't like about the method and disregard them (pre-established repetoire, no composition or improv). I teach kids how to concentrate, how to teach themselves, how to ignore distractions, and the philosophy for joyful performance without nervousness. The result has been that I have trained hundreds of children to have fun playing music well, plus four of my child students have become national acts. Read More
